“Program Turnaround & Winning Culture”
Under the leadership of William “Bill” Hayes from 1988 to 2002, the North Carolina A&T Aggies football program experienced one of the most transformative and successful eras in its history. Coach Hayes established a disciplined, defense-driven culture that elevated the Aggies into a consistent powerhouse within the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), highlighted by multiple conference championships, including a standout title in 1999. Beyond conference success, his teams earned national recognition with appearances in the NCAA Division I-AA (FCS) playoffs, solidifying A&T’s reputation among the top HBCU football programs in the country. Hayes ultimately became the winningest coach in program history at the time of his retirement, leaving behind a legacy defined not only by victories, but by the strong foundation he built—one that continues to shape the excellence, pride, and competitive standard of Aggie football today.
